MCCER, ImageCat, and TTU WISE Collaborate to Survey Post-Katrina Damage
“By far, Katrina’s most impressive and destructive attribute was her surge. In many cases, structures were observed with minor wind damagepartially stripped sheathing, missing roof materials, etc. on an otherwise undamaged upper floor or roof. However, where the higher part of the building performed well, the lower floors were severely damaged by surge, if not completely washed away. Although the National Hurricane Center officially classified Katrina as a Category 3 hurricane at landfall, storm surge is not taken into consideration. The team observed many structures and trees in western Mississippi that appear to have faced a storm surge of 20 ft or greater, a Category 5 according to the Saffir-Simpson scale. Winds, by contrast, were comparatively light, possibly due to the increase in sea level, which would in turn increase surface-based friction.” (p. 8)
