Hurricane Katrina was the costliest and one of the deadliest hurricanes in U.S. history. Not surprisingly, the storm has been subjected to unparalleled study. It is arguably the best documented, researched and scientifically analyzed storm in history. Numerous governmental entities, universities, and private organizations have published reports about Katrina and her effects. The storm is destined to remain a topic of study and discussion for many years to come.
Immediately following the passage of Katrina, Rimkus was called upon to begin to assess the damage and make understandable the cause of the immense destruction. Rimkus engineers surveyed storm surge heights along the coast, gathered wind speed and meteorological data, inspected thousands of properties, and prepared reports of findings. These efforts were instrumental in assisting those tasked with the job of helping the residents along the coast rebuild. Rimkus takes pride in the work its professionals performed after the storm, in many cases under extremely dangerous and difficult working conditions.
Like her predecessors, Katrina has spawned considerable legal battles over who should bear financial responsibility for the losses caused by her fury. Trial lawyers in Mississippi and Louisiana have chosen to vigorously attack the property insurance carriers. At the heart of this attack is the debate over wind versus water. As a result, the trial lawyers have begun to question the engineering reports used to make sense of the devastation. These challenges most often come in the form of sweeping generalizations with little or no science.
Rimkus Consulting Group continues to answer these attacks by standing behind the work of its professionals and the sound engineering that went into each individual damage assessment. The findings contained in our engineering reports have been substantiated by sound engineering science. They have also been confirmed by studies issued by the U.S. Department of Commerce, FEMA, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, Mississippi State University, Princeton University, and others.
Excerpts from those studies and, where available, links to the full studies, can be reviewed by utilizing the buttons to the right.
